Rural Communication
When Wongchu brought a VHF wireless long distance telephone set into Chyangba Village, people from almost every household gathered in front of the primary school to see this wonderful piece of modern science. In order to give free communication service to the local village people, Wongchu invested some of his earnings from his mountaineering career into this wireless telephone. Now people can call their relatives in Kathmandu or anywhere within Nepal. Whenever there's an emergency they can contact someone in Kathmandu and get necessary help.
The telephone is being used to ask relatives in Kathmandu to bring medicines, educational materials, daily commodities such as salt, sugar, oil, spices, etc.
People can also make international call by paying a small amount of Rs. 20 per minute to connect with their relatives who are working abroad in places like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Korea and other countries.
