About Wongchu Sherpa

Wongchu Sherpa on the summit of Everest

Wongchu Sherpa comes from Chyangba Village of Solu Khumbu District, about 500km north of Kathmandu. He is currently Managing Director of Peak Promotion Group of Companies, mostly specialising in mountaineering, trekking business and filming organizer, in Kathmandu, Nepal. He has summitted Everest and many other peaks in the Himalayas.

At the age of 16 he left his village and came down to Kathmandu city in search of his future. He left his home with just Rs. 500 in his pocket. He spent many months in search of job and finally through a Sherpa friend, he found a job as a kitchen boy at a trekking company in Kathmandu. After a few treks, he was promoted to Sherpa support guide. Due to his strength and hard working ability he was then promoted again to full cook and started taking care of groups as big as 25 people. This is when he finally started making friends from all over the world. Trekkers whoever went on trekking with him admired his professionalism, leadership ability and honesty.

After a year of working as full cook, he took part in mountaineering training and received a license of professional trekking and mountaineering guide. He was invited by many of his friends to visit foreign countries like Bangkok, Hong Kong, China, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan , Sweden. USA, Japan , Itlay, German, France, Swish, Denmark, Singapore, Koria, Malaysia and South Africa.

During these trips to foreign countries, his friend Tommy Gustafsson advised him to start his own mountaineering and trekking company and promised to support him by sending groups. Upon his return from one of these trips, he established his own company Peak Promotion in 1992 and made friends with famous climbers like Goran Kropp, David Breashears, and so on.

When he left his village and came to Kathmandu, he had a dream. Now that dream was finally being fulfilled. But he realized that his dream would not be complete until he gave something back to his village. So he made numerous visits back to his village, talked to his fellow villagers and found out the need to start a school urgently. And slowly with one-project-at-a-time, he build Wongchu Biswa Darshan Junior High School. With financial support from David Breashears and Broughton Coburn, he brought electricity to his village. He repaired the old Chyangba Gompa (monastery) and brought clean drinking water and health post at his school.

"There is only one life. We don't have life after this and whatever we earn we must leave here. We cannot take with us. And this is how I will leave what I have earned." Says Wongchu Sherpa.

He has helped in many ways to enhance the tourism industry of Nepal by bringing around 200 tourists every year through his own company. He was one of the key figures in providing support and logistics during the IMAX film production The Everest and has helped many BBC, National Geographic and Lonely Planet documentary productions.

In 1989 he received Suprasidhha Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu Fourth, a prestigious civilian award from Late King Birendra of Nepal.
